Biography[]

Catherine Kobayashi grew up in Vancouver, Canada and often spent holidays in Japan. She eventually moved to Tokyo and she says Japan's capital is one of the most exciting and dynamic cities on the planet. She started her career reporting for a weekly news program and, after a few years, moved into the role of anchor. She currently hosts the morning run (Japan time) on NHK World’s Newsline.

Following the March 11, 2011 disaster, Catherine worked through the night to do live interviews with major broadcasters around the world. The earthquake hit a few hours after her shift had finished. But as soon as the tremors stopped, she instinctively jumped on her bicycle and raced back to the office.

Over the past four years, Catherine has visited northeastern Japan multiple times to report on the effort to rebuild the region and prepare the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant for decommissioning.

Japan has had a number of elections in recent years. During NHK World’s special programming, Catherine has reported from the ruling party's headquarters.

Catherine considers each day an opportunity. She says every hour, there are so many stories to tell from different parts of the world. Stories about war, geopolitical machinations, and extreme weather. And then there are the uplifting tales that give us hope and bring us closer together. She says she’s always trying to fill her brain with more information so she can better explain the factors that shape social, political, and economic events.

Catherine has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro and completed five marathons.

Catherine is currently based in New York City where she continues her journalism career.
