May J. (Born May (Jamileh) Yoshi on June 20, 1988 ) is a J-Pop singer. In addition to her music career, she is also the current host of J-MELO on NHK World.
Early Life[]
Born to a Japanese father and Iranian mother in Yokohama, Japan, she dreamed of being a singer from and took up activities such as vocals lessons, dance and piano growing up.
Her music career began at the age of 14, auditioning for and eventually earning a record contract with Sony Records (under its hip-hop division, Neosite Discs). She also won an Avril Lavigne lookalike contest sponsored by MTV, as she admired her along with singers such as Whitney Houston and Christina Aguilera.
In 2006, at the age of 17, she released her first single, "All My Girls". In 2007, she graduated from the American School in Japan, being able to balance schoolwork and her music career.
In 2009, she parted ways with Sony and signed with a new label, Record Zone.

Beginning in 2008, she began to host J-MELO alongside fellow mixed heritage singer, Shanti. In 2010, Shanti left the show, leaving May J. to be the solo host and currently remains so.
Before she started to host the show, she had also appeared on the show in 2007 as a featured performer and interviewed by then host, melody.. After taking over hosting duties, she still continues to perform her music on the show from time to time, as she is also one of the most requested artists on the show.
